How Duncan's FPOS training helped me save a life

In July 2017 4 firefighters were attending a water rescue course in Wales when suddenly whilst stopped for lunch, they heard a scream for help from the river next to them. Continue reading for the full story of how Pulse EMT's FPOS training saved a casualties life on that day.

"It was around 12:30 in the afternoon when we heard a cry for help from the water. We were situated in the car park having lunch at this point so we quickly donned our dry suits and proceeded to the riverbank. It became apparent quite quickly that the unknown male was face down in the water as his friend was trying to keep him afloat but was physically exhausted and because of this, the patients face had gone underwater.

I turned around and shouted to FF Scullion to get the FPOS kit and bring it over to the riverbank. FF Meason and I tried to locate a radial pulse but we could not find one so I made sure the airways were clear and we began CPR. It became apparent after removing his top to fix the DEFIB pads that the male (Now known as Kevin) had a pacemaker. This was not a concern so we still attached the DEFIB. After approximately 30 sets of compression's and 2 shocks on the DEFIB Kevin thankfully came back around. I then replaced the bag and mask with his own oxygen mask after my assessment that he could breath for himself now.

We quickly got him up to the car park and waited for the Ambulance to arrive. Once the ambulance was on scene, I gave them a casualty hand over and assisted them where needed.

Kevin was taken to hospital and was alive and well when he left our care.

I truly believe that if it wasn’t for the FPOS training that we have received then Kevin sadly wouldn’t have survived. It was because of our fast response and confidence in our training that we had received that he is still alive. The training we receive ensured that we kept calm under pressure and If we hadn't had it, there would have been a big price to pay with this incident."

A tragic loss

Last November, tragically, we lost a really good friend whilst out in the hills in the Lake District. Unfortunately CPR alone was not enough to save him.
Since then, I've been on a bit of a personal mission which finally came to fruition this week.
Thanks to the excellent training, advice & huge generosity of Duncan from PULSE Emergency Medical Training, I'm now in possession a portable defibrillator. It's a massive comfort to be able to take this potentially life saving piece of kit into remote places, although i hope to never need it..

If you're unfamiliar with the operation of these devices (they're so simple to use), get yourself on a course or at the very least, watch some youtube videos...

Two fold thanks

I attended your FPOS training course at JCB Wardlow quarry June/July 2017.
I'd just like to thank Duncan for the course he led. Well delivered in an easy to understand language.

The reason for penning this mail is two fold.
Firstly myself my wife and youngest daughter were involved in the Barcelona terrorist attack last August. I used the knowledge gained on the the course to administer some first aid to a young lady who was in some distress.

Secondly, last Tuesday night whilst at dinner in a local restaurant to celebrate a birthday my mother had a seizure. Again I was able to apply the knowledge gained to administer the correct care and manage the situation until the paramedics arrived then give an accurate description of what had happened to the patient with timescales.

In both of these instances the overriding sense for me was one of confidence at being able to give the correct care and deal with the situation appropriately. Once again many thanks.

A quarrying industry first

Marshalls Minerals completed a First Person on Scene (FPOS) Level 3 Training Course in Emergency First Aid and Trauma Management with Pulse Training over the past 3 years, being the first to participate in the Quarrying industry.

In total, 46 students have completed the 5 day training course which has equipped the students with skills to manage the scene and patients, if ever required, in one of its remote quarry sites, which will inevitably bridge the gap until the emergency services arrive at the scene.

Marshalls made the decision to go ahead with the FPOS training so that our staff would be prepared should a situation arise within any of our sites and also to give staff the skills and support to be able to deal with a major incident if it should occur within any of the quarries.  We have also purchased the latest FPOS equipment to support the training given to the staff.

This course takes general first aid at work to a higher level, giving the students knowledge and confidence.  The course is delivered with a very hands on approach and is extremely proactive.  It has been well received throughout our business and we would highly recommend the FPOS course to anybody considering offering it out in their workplace.  The tutor Duncan is first class with a wealth of knowledge offering as much support to the students as needed.

I would definitely recommend giving your employees the opportunity to train to the next level in first aid, the knowledge and confidence it gives to them is paramount to dealing with situations quickly and effectively, should they arise.
